Artist Story: Gerren Benoit

After several years of being lost and trying to find my niche in the world; my friend/tattoo artist inspired me to purchase a camera.  I pondered the idea for several weeks before actually deciding to make the purchase.  The moment I snapped my first photo, I realized this is what I had been searching for.  I began looking at the world differently, not with my eyes, but through the lens of my camera.

My work develops into a progression of evolving conversations exploring the contradictions and complexities of living in today's society. My photographs bring forth feelings of emotional turmoil and ambiguity. The melding of childlike nostalgia and adult dread often creates works that depict the interior struggle of most humans.

I strive to construct a vernacular that resides on the thin line between satire and homage, inducing the viewer to evaluate their political, social, cultural and religious affiliations.  My photos ask the viewer to submerge into the depths of their own minds and contemplate the images and ideas we export to the world. I invite the audience to allow each image to speak directly to their souls.

In my photographs religious figures are depicted in states of defeat and anguish strewn across sacred landscapes, a personification of society’s increasingly self-imposed separation of religion and life.  My other works allow viewers to travel down a road where beauty is found in the most unexpected locations.

I strive to re-expose cultural idiosyncrasies that often become too familiar to recognize through the chaos. The conclusion being adversity is part of life. Nevertheless, one should not lose hope of a promising and forgiving future.
