Artist Story: Marcos Buarque
Marcos Buarque was born during 1964, revolution year, in Salvador, Bahia. In 1978 he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, where he began learning to paint on his own. It was during that time when he painted his first painting, an urban scene depicturing the sugar loaf. This painting immediately sold to his neighbor, who said when he first saw the painting that was love at first sight.
After four years of living in Rio de Janeiro, he returned to Salvador and started a class in woodcarving at MAM. His professor was the artist Clerio Benevuto, who became Buarque master and support. He believed that Buarque had a talent to be developed. After the class, in that same year, he had his first group exhibition of print in the studio of Clerio Benevenuto in the Pelourinho area, Salvador.
Lately, Marcos Buarque has been creating abstract and contemporary paintings with vibrant colors. He plays with colors with cohesion and harmony, in a way of someone who knows what they are doing. He has received compliments from national and international critics, including known artists such; as Carlos Eduardo da Rocha, Reynivaldo Brito, Matilde Matos, Carlos Bastos, Floriano Teixeira, Jose Olimpio da Rocha and Aldo Tripodi.
Buarque participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions. Currently he has works of art in several private collections throughout Brasil and other countries. He also has paintings in upscale art galleries in Brasil. Marcos Buarque was invited to be a part of the book 100 artists of Bahia. Recently he won a prize of international recognition for his abstract paintings.
